Small Gotland Fleece Vegetarian Sheepskin Rug

This rug is made from part of a Gotland fleece that was sheared in spring 2019. The rug is different shades of grey and the curls vary in size. The rug is made from a piece of fleece that features curls from different parts of the fleece.

Gotland sheep have fleeces that vary in colour from nearly black to light grey. The colours also vary across each fleece, usually being darker across the sheep’s back then lighter down the sides. The fleeces are curly and have a lovely lustre. Gotland sheep are often sheared twice a year for welfare reasons.

Description

The rug has been handmade by myself, the whole process is manual, wet felting using only natural ingredients; a lot of elbow grease and natural soap. It has a Shetland wool backing, which is also British wool.

These rugs are often referred to as vegetarian sheep skin rugs, this is because they are made from the sheared fleece that is clipped each year to keep the sheep cool in summer and prevent fly strike.

There is no skin. A wool felted backing is applied to the fleece, so that the end product looks like a sheep skin rug, but has a far more natural look and retains the character and beauty of the natural fleece.
