How to Change to Natural Shampoo Bars

5th September 2019

Why Change to Natural Shampoo?

  • No plastic bottles
  • No palm oil
  • No unnatural, harmful ingredients such as parabens
  • They naturally condition and care for your hair

Natural Shampoo Bars – Use with dilute Apple Cidar Vinegar as conditioner.

Shampooing Your Hair with Natural Shampoo Bars

Natural shampoo bars look like bars of soap and typically are made from castor oil, coconut oil and olive oil and usually have essential oils added. Castor oil has long been used to promote hair growth and moisturise hair and scalp.

To wash your hair with a natural shampoo bar, first wet your hair. You can then apply the bar directly to your hair, but just gently stroke in the direction of your hair. Or if you prefer, lather the shampoo in your hands and then apply to your hair.

Work up a good lather. Rinse and shampoo again if needed. Rinse hair thoroughly. You will notice straight away that your hair feels completely different.

Conditioning Your Hair

Your hair may feel slightly heavier than usual, as soon as you have washed it. If you have very short hair this may be ok, but if your hair is longer it is best to use a natural conditioner. Apple cider vinegar has long been used as a hair conditioner and scalp tonic and works beautifully to counteract the oil in the shampoo bar.

Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse

Mix one part apple cider vinegar with three parts water. I find an old conditioner bottle is ideal for this. Apply a small amount as a conditioning rinse once you have thoroughly rinsed all the natural shampoo from your hair. Rinse out the conditioner with clean water.

Gently towel dry your hair and then style as usual. Immediately you will be able to feel the difference. Your hair will feel thicker and look healthy and shiny.

The Changeover period

It may take a few washes with natural shampoo before your hair settles down and feels great. This is because there may be a build up of old shampoo, conditioner and styling products that need eradicating. Stick with it, as your hair may feel greasy or even dry at first, but it should settle down after a few washes.
